If you're looking for a Thai movie that doesn't require much thought, and offers both laughter and excitement without needing to use your brain much, "Atma Fa Pha" is the right answer. An action comedy that brings a monk and a shaman together in a chaotic situation, because of karma from a past life, the monk has to run from lightning strikes without warning.

Plot Summary (No Spoilers)

The story of Phra Jued (played by Pramote Pathan), a young monk with a bizarre fate, because he is karmically linked with Mor Pakpao (played by Pongkul Suebsong) from a past life. Whatever sins Mor Pakpao commits, the karmic consequences fall on Phra Jued. Moreover, Mor Pakpao swears by lightning to win over a girl he's pursuing, and Phra Jued gets caught in the crossfire, struck by lightning. He must quickly stop Mor Pakpao to save himself, but Mor Pakpao doesn't believe him. The chaotic story of these two unfolds.

Acting and Characters

Pramote Pathan as Phra Jued portrays the naive and innocent monk adorably, while Pongkul Suebsong plays the boastful shaman with lively energy. The two have great chemistry, with most of the humor coming from their verbal sparring. Additionally, Saranatcha Thanapatpisan as Juang and Carissa Springett as Wai add color to the story.

Direction, Cinematography, and Music

Pipat Jomkok, the director, handles comedic timing well. The action scenes, while not spectacular, are fun in typical Thai style. The cinematography beautifully captures the rural atmosphere, and the music complements the humor appropriately, especially the use of the lute (a shaman's instrument) in the soundtrack, adding a humorous ritualistic feel.

Editorial Analysis

Although the film focuses on entertainment, it subtly incorporates philosophy about the law of karma and reincarnation. However, the film has limitations in its rather straightforward plot, and some jokes may feel prolonged. Overall, "Atma Fa Pha" is a pleasant Thai film for the whole family, especially for those who enjoy lighthearted comedies without much depth.

Verdict

A Thai action comedy that's easy to watch, suitable for those seeking entertainment without much thought. If you're a fan of this genre, you'll surely laugh at the antics of Phra Jued and Mor Pakpao.
